Competitor Update #1 (major announcements, please read)
Objective
The Herbalife Corporate Triathlon Championship (HCTC) is a new element to the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Triathlon promoting teamwork and a healthy workforce. This opens a opportunity for colleagues to participate in a social atmosphere outside of the boardroom.
Goals
Herbalife goals are to challenge companies to enter and aims to provide an opportunity for positive competition amongst corporations, as well as a chance to network within the business community. The HCTC is an opportunity to build positive relationships among teammates and corporate components.
Rules & Regulations
The Herbalife Corporate Triathlon Championship allows employees to compete individually or in relay format. All HCTC competitors will be competing in the SPRINT distance (.5 mile swim, 19 mile bike, 5k run). To compete for the Championship Cup, each corporate team must field 3 relay teams, 3 individuals or a combination of the two in order to achieve 3 finishing times. To win the “Championship Cup” a team will need to field 3 total finish times. Corporate Teams are not limited to 3 relays/individuals. You may have as many registrants on your team as you like, however only the top 3 times will count towards the Championship Cup results. The company/team with the fastest 3 total times will receive the “Herbalife Corporate Triathlon Championship Cup”. This trophy will reside for a year at the winning team’s offices.
Registration Details
$25 of each Individual Entry and $50 of each Relay Entry will be donated to Ready, Set, Gold! If you have questions about registering, call Kylee at 714.978.1528 or email her at Kylee@PacificSportsLLC.com Any athlete that is currently registered can switch over to the HCTC. We are very excited to announce our move to the new L.A. LIVE Nokia Plaza for our new Finish Festival this year! The venue for the finish is truly spectacular and unlike anything at any triathlon. It will be a true stadium effect that will incorporate the brilliant LED screens at L.A. LIVE and also move our T2 to Chick Hearn Court. We have worked closely in the past with AEG (owner of STAPLES Center) and with Herbalife moving their new corporate headquarters to L.A. LIVE it sealed the deal. Read the press release now. Click on the image for a larger view.

For the first time, the LA Triathlon is now sanctioned with USA Triathlon. With our involvement in the Life Time Fitness Series on a national basis, we felt providing consistency across the races was paramount and sanctioning the Toyota US Open in Dallas last year began the process. What this means is that our insurance, rules and officiating will be through USAT. This will mean that all participants will need to be either an annual member of USAT or procure a one-day membership for $10 which can be done when picking up your registration, if you have already entered.
We will be offering the very popular Valet Service this year that we launched in 2007. The big change this year is it will be offered directly for purchase (it was a contest last year) to participants. Registration for the valet service will begin on June 9th.
Here is the scoop--we have 100 spots only. On race morning, you will drive your car to Venice Beach where a valet service will take your car (just like at your favorite fancy restaurant) while you unload your bike and gear for the start of the race just a few short yards away. While you are completing all three segments of the LA Triathlon, your car will be valeted directly to the finish parking just a few yards away from L.A. LIVE. When you are done celebrating, walk over to your car and you are on your way. Price is $100. Again, only 100 spots. First come, first serve. You can sign up for this when you register online. If you have already registered, call 714-978-1528 and we can add it to your registration.
We will be offering a comprehensive training clinic for all individuals preparing for the LA Triathlon. The triathlon clinics will be open to athletes of all ability levels. They will be tailored to include valuable information for anyone seeking to learn or improve their racing abilities. The clinics will run 4 hours long and will focus on open water swim technique, cycling, running, transition, injury prevention, and nutrition. All participants will receive an outstanding schwag bag filled with triathlon essentials and sponsor giveaways. Price per session - $100.
DATES
Saturday, June 28th
Saturday, July 26th
Saturday, August 31st
For more information, visit our training page.
The Triathlon will begin at Venice Beach at 6:45 am with the swim segment. The bike course will proceed through the Fairfax District, Museum Row, Hancock Park, Hollywood, Downtown, Chinatown, and Elysian Park areas. Crossing points are listed for intersections that cars can cross at the direction of DOT traffic personnel, considering the safety of the bikers or runners. All streets will be opened by noon. It is advised that persons with unessential travel avoid driving in areas affected by the event. Vehicles will not be allowed on the course at any time. However, several crossing points have been designated to allow traffic to cross the route. The Department of Transportation will be aggressively enforcing all temporary parking restrictions for this event to secure the safety of the participants and to facilitate the movement of traffic around road closures. Typical vehicle recovery costs are in excess of $130, which does not include the $60 citation fee. For additional information:

Transition 1 (T1) Bag Procedure (typical T1 items include, wet-suit, goggles, swimsuit, small personal effects)
1. Participants are heavily encouraged to bring their own bag. We will have a size limit of 36" x 12" x 18" (a standard cubic shaped gym bag). If you do not have a bag at T1, we will give you a trash-type bag for your use. We definitely discourage this.
2. At the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Health & Fitness Expo, upon check-in you will receive with your race numbers two adhesive luggage tags (much like those you get when boarding airlines and checking luggage). One tag will be used on your T1 bag, the other for T2 bag.
3. Wrap the adhesive tag around a strap of your bag.
4. Mark anything and everything in the bag itself with your race number.
5. When you finish the swim segment of the race, stuff ALL items into this T1 bag.
6. Very important, ANYTHING not in the bag will be considered lost and found. We will not stuff your bag for you.
7. Absolutely no bicycle pumps will be allowed in T1. Note: Take care of filling your tires before you bring your bike to T1. You must put everything in your bag yourself. Everything. There will be limited bike pumps available from us at T1.
8. T1 bags will be loaded by us on to buses and transported to T2 by our Shuttle contractor. The first load will leave at 7:30 am and will continue until all bags have been delivered.
9. They will be available at T2 at designated "T2 Bag Pick Up" upon completion of your race. The location for T2 bag disbursement will be along the south side of Transition 2 next to the South Hall of the Convention Center. This will be outside the center of the transition area.
10. Final note on T1. We will allow bikes ONLY on race day, not the day before. The transition area will open at T1 at 4:30am. Sprint participants will be allowed to enter the transition area after the Olympic distance race starts.
Transition 2 (T2) Bag Procedure (typical T2 items include running shoes, singlet, small personal affects)
1. Participants are heavily encouraged to bring and use their own bag. We will have a size limit of 18" x 6" x 18" (a standard backpack size bag). If you do not have your own bag, we will give you a drawstring goody bag for this use at the Expo.
2. IMPORTANT: You must bring all of your T2 gear to the Expo upon check in. No exceptions.
3. At the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Health & Fitness Expo, upon check-in you will receive in your technical bag two adhesive luggage tags (much like those you get when boarding airlines and checking luggage). One tag will be used on your T1 bag, the other for T2 bag.
4. Wrap the adhesive tag around a strap of your T2 bag. If it is a drawstring bag, wrap it around the drawstring
5. Mark anything and everything in the bag itself with your race number.
6. When you finish the cycle segment of the race, stuff ALL items into this T2 bag you will be taking off at that juncture (i.e., bike shoes, helmet).
7. Very important, ANYTHING not in the bag will be considered lost and found. We will not stuff your bag. You must put everything in yourself. Everything.
8. Drop near or hang the T2 bag on your bike, it will remain there until after the race for you to retrieve.
****Please remember to attach your run bib after you pick it up to whatever you are wearing on the run and include in the bag for T2.
**We are not responsible for lost items that have not been properly marked with identification information.
This is a point to point race. If you do not have your own transportation, you will have to take a shuttle EITHER before the race from downtown to the start in Venice Beach OR after the race from downtown back to the start in Venice. You can take your bike on the shuttle and purchase tickets for those not participating in the race. The cost of the shuttle is $20 and you must purchase your ticket with your entry, or if they are still available, you can purchase a ticket at the expo. You can purchase up to 3 tickets while registering online. You can also go back in after you have registered online and purchase additional tickets if you wish by going to the "Triathlon Extras" category. You will pick up your tickets at a designated area at the expo.
Shuttle service will be provided to participants only starting at 4:30 am and continuing until 1:30 pm. Cost is $20. Shuttles will be going from the finish line/T2 downtown to the Marriott Marina del Rey and then to Venice Beach in a triangle rotation. One tip--the Marina Del Rey Marriott is close enough to the start in Venice that some may choose to ride their bikes there in the morning. Here are the shuttle stops (you can pick it up at any of these locations):
- Venice Beach Blvd. North at Pacific Ave. (located adjacent to T1)
- LA Convention Center (South Hall) on Figueroa St/Figueroa Dr. just south of Pico Blvd.
- Marina Del Rey Marriott
You must place your wristband on your wrist. This will allow you into both T1 and T2 on Sunday. Without this wristband, you will not be allowed in either transition area or the post race athletes food and beverage or massage area.
This year, our timing firm is from Premier Event Management (PEM). We are employing their standard procedure which will require picking up your timing chip at Transition 1 (T1) in Venice. Once you check in to T1, rack your bike and get body marked inside T1, proceed to the chip area to pick up your timing device. When you cross the finish line, the chip will be removed from your ankle immediately following the race. If you are racing in a relay, the chip will serve as you "baton" and must be exchanged between the three relay members when transitioning.
The Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Triathlon will be chip timed. Each athlete will be issued a unique timing device and is responsible for its return after the event. Relay teams will get one timing device which will be passed from person to person during the race. By picking up the timing device each athlete agrees to pay the $30 replacement cost if the device is lost or not returned. The device will be attached to you throughout the race. Your times will be recorded as you pass over mats which will electronically record your times, including transition times. It is a very accurate system. YOU WILL BE CHARGED A $30 FEE FOR ALL NON-RETURNED CHIPS
CHIP INSTRUCTIONS:
- Chips are non-transferable! Be careful not to switch chips with anyone.
- Wrap the chip anklet around your left ankle before starting the race.
- Start in your assigned wave or risk not being scored.
- To receive an official time, you must run or walk across the timing mats at the start line, on the course, and at the finish line.
- Return the chip anklet to us in the corral after the finish line.
YOU MUST STAY IN ORDER IN THE FINISH CHUTE ONCE YOU CROSS THE FINISH LINE. We will ask you to STOP at the end of the chute to pull your bib # tab. You will then be directed to take off your transponder anklet. No anklet - no split times. If you do not finish the race for any reason, return this anklet to the finish line staff.
Results will be posted on our website following the race. No results will be mailed to participants. Prelliminary results will be posted at the finish line following the race.
Wet suits will be allowed and are optional for the amateurs (not allowed for the professionals). You must wear a cycling helmet to participate. You must wear your timing chip throughout the race. No drafting rules (disqualification) will be in effect on the bike. Absolutely no headphones of any kind (iPod, CD Player, Walkman, etc.).
We will be having photographers at the race who will be shooting photos of all participants which you will be able to order. They identify you by your race number, so it is very important that are able to be identified. You will be given two small numbers in addition to your bib number, one for the front of your helmet and the other for around the seat post of your bike. These numbers match your bib number. Your bib number must be worn during the run portion of the race ON YOUR FRONT. Please do not alter this number in any way. Bike, helmet and bid numbers must match in order to be allowed out of the transition area. Swim cap must be worn during the swim and helmet worn during the bike. Body marking is not required but pens will be available at the Expo and on race morning. It is extremely helpful for photography and security reasons and we encourage it.
Helpful hints for bodymarking and tips to make sure the photographers can see your bib number:
1. Use a permanent marker
2. Bodymark BEFORE applying sunscreen
3. Place the small (approx. 2"x4") race number sticker on the FRONT of your helmet.
4. Keep you race bib on the FRONT of your body at all times during the race.
Action Sports International will be at the event taking photos. After the race, go to our photos page for a link to sign up to have them notify you when your photos are ready.

swim: 30 minutes
bike: 1:30 to 1:45

- Venice Beach Swim Start. At the end of Venice Blvd. at the beach. It is the perfect location to watch all the opening ceremonies, wave starts, the pros, and T1.
- STAPLES Center. The finish line for the LA Triathlon. Lots of activity with the finish, entertainment, food and expo vendors. Easy to get to from the start. Just head East on the 10 freeway.
- T2. The hotbed of activity at Pico and Figueroa adjacent to the finish line festival. This transition area will house both the age group and pro transitions. Activity and excitement all day long and often where the race is won and lost.
- Figueroa between 11th and 12th. Stand in the shade of STAPLES Center while you cheer for triathletes nearing the end of their bike segment. This is also the turn around point for the Olympic run course. Witness athletes starting and finishing their run from this location.

- Disney Concert Hall (Grand and 1st Street). Near the first turn around on the Olympic run course. It overlooks a beautiful Frank Gehry design and home of one of the city's finest restaurants, Patina. Walk over to the beautiful new Cathedral just a block away.
- Rent a helicopter. The Hollywood way to see the race, rent one or bring your own. See the entire swim, bike and run sections from above. The best way to see all the action.
